Shakyamuni Buddha lived in the 6th to 4th century BCE in what is now Nepal. He was born into a royal family, Siddhartha left his life of luxury in search of truth and the end of suffering. After years of meditation and spiritual seeking, he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India. From that point forward, he became known as Shakyamuni Buddha, "the Sage of the Shakyas." His teachings are encapsulated in the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.
