Niguma Thangka – The Great Yogini and Tantric Master of Tibetan Buddhism

Sale price$300.00

This traditional thangka painting portrays Jetsun Niguma, one of the most revered female masters in Tibetan Buddhism and the founder of the Shangpa Kagyu lineage. She is depicted seated gracefully on a lotus cushion, surrounded by a radiant aura of flames that represent the blazing wisdom of enlightenment. Niguma’s body glows with a warm, natural tone, and she is adorned with delicate bone ornaments and jeweled garlands, symbols of her mastery over illusion and her transcendence of worldly attachments.

In her right hand, she holds a skull cup (kapala) filled with nectar, signifying the transformation of ignorance into awakened wisdom. Her left hand holds a khatvanga staff, decorated with symbolic elements such as the vajra, trident, and skulls, representing the union of compassion and emptiness. Her semi-wrathful expression radiates both compassion and fierce awareness, reminding practitioners of the dynamic balance between serenity and power on the path to liberation.

According to Buddhist tradition, Niguma was born in Kashmir and is said to have been the sister or consort of the great tantric master Narayana (Nāropa). She received profound tantric teachings directly from Vajradhara, the primordial Buddha, and became a fully realized dakini, or embodiment of enlightened feminine wisdom. Her teachings were transmitted to Khyungpo Naljor, who later founded the Shangpa Kagyu lineage in Tibet, making Niguma one of the key female lineage holders in Vajrayana Buddhism.

This thangka captures Niguma’s essence as a yogini and dakini of great realization. The soft landscape and serene sky surrounding her emphasize the natural harmony and vast awareness she attained through deep meditation and realization. Hand painted in Kathmandu using natural mineral pigments on cotton canvas, this sacred artwork invites contemplation, devotion, and spiritual awakening.
